Interior Renovation: How to Childproof Your Home for Your Lil Ones

As parents, we would always do our best to keep our children safe all the time. However, unintentional injuries happen to children at home more often than we would like to. This is why it is important to consider childproofing your home while you undergo your home interior renovation. Here are some safety measures to keep your home a child-friendly haven for your little ones!

Install Safety Latches

If your child is already at the stage where he/she is crawling and is capable of exploring around the house, it is advisable to install easy-to-reach cabinets and drawers. This is to keep children away from potentially harmful substances such as breakables, cleaning chemicals, and kitchen appliances. Moreover, these latches also prevent little fingers from being clipped by the opening and closing of these drawers and cabinets.

Use Safety Gates to Cordon Off Unsafe Areas

Another fixture that you can consider investing in is a safety gate. Install safety gates at hazardous areas such as the top and bottom of stairs and in the doorways of certain rooms to prevent your baby from accessing these places until they can move about safely. Make sure that the safety gates are fastened properly while you are not at home, otherwise your children might be able to swing it open.

Keep Small Toys Away

Small toys pose a choking hazard for your child; when swallowed, they can completely block the airway which can cause fatal choking. To be safe, it is best not to introduce these toys before your child reaches the age of 5. Otherwise, make sure that they are kept away safely out of reach like a high shelf or cabinet when there is no adult around to supervise when your child is playing. Alternatively, store them in plastic containers to avoid your child from having easy access to them. Small toys apart, keeping your home organised and decluttered will also help to reduce the possibility of your child getting injured.

Go For Rounded or Soft Furniture Edges

Another safety precaution to take note of is to use furniture such as tables and chairs with rounded or soft edges. Sharp and hard edges might cause your child to sustain injuries when they knock into them. This does not mean that you need to overhaul your existing furniture; you can simply fit corner guards to make them more baby-friendly!

As experienced interior designers, we always consider every aspect while coming out with our home interior designs, including how to eliminate the chances of your loved ones contracting injuries at home.
