5 Tips to Declutter Your Home

What’s worse than having a small home? A small home with too many things in it! Keeping your home clutter-free is usually easier said than done. The longer we live somewhere, the more items we will accumulate over time. This means that things can quickly get out of hand if we do not declutter often. Even with the most space-efficient home interior design, it can be hard to keep your home organised if you are unwilling to part with some of your belongings!

Hence, here are our recommendations on how to prevent yourself from drowning in a mountain of your things at home!

1. Spend Some Time Decluttering Every Week

Whether you like it or not, some things are just meant to go. Keep this in mind: The more often you declutter, the less time it will take. Spend about 30 minutes a week decluttering your home and focus on one room at a time. One of the best rooms to start on is the bedroom as that is where you store your clothes, cosmetics, accessories, etc. The vanity table is a good place to begin by removing empty perfume and cosmetic bottles.

2. Clear Out Your Wardrobe

This next tip might be a big no-no for many women, but it can help to drastically reduce clutter. Your clothes wardrobe is often filled with clutter in the form of clothes that you no longer wear, apparels that were bought out of impulse or those outfits that have only seen the light of day once. After clearing out your wardrobe, you’ll realise how much space has actually been wasted due to clutter and unworn clothes. The apparels that you no longer require yet are in good condition can be sold for a little extra pocket money or be donated to a charity organization. Discarding clutter in your wardrobe will also free up additional storage capacity for you to store more items.

3. Utilise Containers to Store Smaller Items

As interior designers, we are always looking for creative ways to maximise functionality and practicality. Consider using containers if you are someone who owns a lot of accessories and knick-knacks like earrings, bracelets, watches, and rings. This is also a great way to ensure that your accessories are kept in one place instead of being scattered all around the home.

4. Install Wardrobes and Cabinets for Added Storage

One of the challenges that homeowners with compact homes face is space constraints. Couple this with owning a lot of stuff at home easily spells clutter and mess. A great solution to solve this mess is by installing closets and cabinets to increase your storage capacity. Moreover, you can also increase closet space by using organisers like hangers, clips, and shelves.

5. Stick to the Basics

Minimalistic home renovation styles are becoming an increasingly popular interior design trend amongst Singaporean homeowners today. Minimalism promotes simplicity and going back to the bare necessities. Practising minimalism strips away unnecessary furniture and fixtures to reduce the complexity of your home’s interior setting. For example, all you need in your bedroom is a bed, a bedside table to place the items you need beside you while you’re sleeping (mobile phone, water bottle, etc.) and a wardrobe to store your clothes.
